“A Quebec man facing arson charges for allegedly setting forest fires during the province’s unprecedented wildfire season will remain detained ahead of a bail hearing on Monday.

Brian Paré, 37, of Chibougamau, Que., was arrested and charged with two counts of arson on Thursday. Prosecutors allege Paré deliberately ignited a fire or explosion “on several occasions” in a forest between July 8 and Tuesday. A second arson charge is in connection with a fire at a fishing cabin around May 31 that was not owned by the accused.

Provincial police say they are trying to determine whether the fires allegedly started by Paré were connected to the major wildfires near Chibougamau, located 450 kilometres northwest of Quebec City, that led to the evacuation of its 7,500 residents in June.”

People are fighting back in the UK. The government has been installing thousands of cameras to track the movements and emissions of vehicles and fine vehicles for traveling too far in normal cars, under the Ultra-Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) scheme.

“…analysis of crowd-sourced data showing almost nine in 10 cameras put up to enforce the expansion have been stolen or damaged in southeast London…

Analysis by The Times suggests that 156 of the 185 cameras erected in one 56-square mile area south of Sydenham and Sidcup have been vandalised or taken…

The ULEZ, which currently only covers central London, will expand to the whole of the capital from next week.

It means more drivers will have to pay the £12.50 daily fee for the most polluting vehicles in a bid to boost air quality.

Some 2,750 cameras are being installed in new areas the zone is being widened to, but TfL will not share the locations.”

“…roughly 2.2 million women of childbearing age lived in so-called maternity deserts in 2020, according to March of Dimes, which it defined as counties without a hospital, a birth center, and doctors and nurse midwives with experience delivering babies…

This has led to rising maternal death rates in the United States, which are currently at the highest rate since 1965, and are now higher in America than in any other high-income country. And it only adds to a seemingly irreversible trend of a graying population with fewer and fewer children. “

Liberal columnist David Brooks published an opinion piece in the New York Times making the case for a major rethink of the way the left-wing views the rest of America.

Analyst Comment: There are two paths forward for the authoritarian left. The first path is to triple down and keep jamming new policies down the public’s throat as fast as possible. That approach backfired in a very dramatic way during the pandemic and cracks are appearing in the Biden’s admin’s latest attempt at implementing this strategy. The other attempt is to take a step back, claim moderation and push many of these pet projects through slower, incremental mechanisms. A key threat to the elite class is the populist takeover of the Republican party. RINOs are rapidly being replaced with populists, a trend that directly endangers the elite class as it means the party will no longer be a reliable co-conspirator for the dems.

“Former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan was convicted in a corruption case on Saturday, according to one of his lawyers, which could disqualify him from running in national elections due later this year.

Khan wasn’t present in court. Police said that Khan was arrested immediately following the verdict in the eastern city of Lahore, where he has been living in his family home in recent months.

Khan, the leader of the country’s biggest opposition party, was sentenced to three years in jail by a court in Islamabad, said Gohar Khan, a lawyer for the politician. Khan maintains his innocence in this case, as well as in dozens of other legal cases brought against him by the government since he was ousted from power in April last year.

In recent months Pakistan, which is mired in a deep economic crisis, has seen a broad political crackdown on Khan and his party. Thousands of Khan’s supporters were arrested earlier this year after protests at military sites over his arrest in May on corruption charges. The courts had freed him days later on bail.”

” Republican Rep. Ronny Jackson of Texas was handcuffed and placed on the ground face-first by local law enforcement while he was trying to assist a teenage girl in medical distress at a rodeo over the weekend, according to a witness who spoke to CNN.

In a Facebook post, Linda Dianne Shouse, a home healthcare and traveling nurse, said her 15-year-old relative was “seizing due to possible hypoglycemia” Saturday night at the White Deer rodeo, about 45 miles northeast of Amarillo, Texas. Jackson represents the Amarillo area and was an attendee at the rodeo.

Shouse said she and another family member, who is also a nurse, were attending to the girl when Jackson, who is an ER physician, stepped in to assist. Shouse said she didn’t know Jackson was a congressman at the time but told CNN they were all working together to help the teen girl.

‘We were just waiting for EMS to get there. The police came up, the deputies, highway patrol, and everyone was just screaming, ‘Get back, get back, get back,’’ she said during an interview.

Shouse said she was pushed back and then punched in the chest by a woman and said she saw a law enforcement official screaming in Jackson’s face, telling him to ‘Get the f**k back.’

‘He was trying to tell them that he was a doctor and probably trying to tell him who he was, to be honest. And they were screaming that they did not effing care who he was,’ she said. ‘And the next thing I knew, they had him on the ground, grabbed him by the shirt, threw him on the ground, face first into the concrete and had him in cuffs.’

Shouse said once they realized Jackson was a congressman and doctor, they uncuffed him and started apologizing.”

“…a horrific incident in the summer of 2022 when 48-year-old Timothy Reynolds was shot in the back by a so-called ‘squeegee boy’ in the crime-ridden district at an intersection on President Street.

Reynolds, 48, grabbed a baseball bat and approached the group of teens, who were apparently harassing and extorting motorists for cash to wash their windshields. One of the teens grabbed a pistol and shot the man in the back, face, and neck. He bled out and died of his injuries. Office workers are routinely harassed by teens on the strip of roadway…

One year later, the shooter, 16, Tavon Scott, was acquitted of first and second-degree murder, but jurors found him guilty of voluntary manslaughter of Reynolds. Jurors rejected the idea the killing of Reynolds was premeditated murder, even though Scott put on a face mask to hide his identity and retrieved a gun from a backpack.

Lawyers for Scott argued he acted in self-defense, while prosecutors stated Reynolds was walking away when the teen unleashed a hail of bullets at the motorist…”

Highlights from report on US crime trends:

  • The number of homicides in the 30 study cities providing homicide data was 9.4% lower—202 fewer homicides—during the first half of 2023 than in the first half of 2022.
  • Robberies, residential burglaries, nonresidential burglaries, and larcenies all decreased in the first half of 2023 compared to the first half of 2022.
  • Violent crimes remain elevated compared to 2019, the year prior to the COVID pandemic and racial justice protests of 2020. There were 24% more homicides during the first half of 2023 than during the first half of 2019 in the study cities.
  • Motor vehicle thefts continued their upward trend through the first half of 2023. There were 33.5% more motor vehicle thefts from January through June 2023 compared to the first half of 2022.

Analyst Comment: Non-reporting bias is becoming a major complication with some of these stats. In many cities, residents know theft is not investigated by the police, so reporting of theft has decreased. Car theft however, requires a police report for a claim to be filed. This explains the discrepancy between the increase in car theft reports versus recent decrease in other forms of reported theft. theft is up across the board in many cities, but reporting rates have decreased.

“Chicago police are investigating accusations that a group of officers had improper sexual contact with newly arrived immigrants.

One of the officers, assigned to the Ogden police district, covering Lawndale and Little Village, has been accused of impregnating a teenage girl, law enforcement sources said Thursday.

Multiple other officers are accused of engaging in sexual acts with immigrants…

Police officials wouldn’t say if any of the officers had been stripped of their police powers or whether the accusations involving the teen had been referred to Cook County prosecutors. A COPA spokesperson didn’t respond to a request for comment.

About 11,000 immigrants have come to Chicago since August. Many were placed on buses or planes and driven to the city at the direction of Texas Gov. Greg Abbott. Chicago has grappled with finding adequate shelter for the new arrivals.

Hundreds have had to spend nights sleeping on the floors of police stations. To ease the burden on the stations, the city has turned to housing immigrants at temporary locations, including Wilbur Wright College on the Northwest Side.”

“The District of Columbia last week ended its plan to mandate the COVID-19 vaccine for children to attend school this upcoming academic year.

In announcing the decision, the Council of the District of Columbia noted that no state has mandated the COVID-19 vaccine for schoolchildren, that the public health emergency has ended and that not attending school has detrimental effects for children.”

Analyst Comment: This is a huge win: One of the most radical left-wing states in the nation backed down from covid vax mandates. Hardly anyone wants to inject this stuff into their kids. Only 33% of people have had three or more Covid shots down from 81% who received their first shot.

Another device was detonated outside a Nike store on H Street, north of Capitol Hill, at 4:36 a.m., just six minutes after the first blast.

The suspect later tossed a Molotov cocktail at a Safeway on 40th Street at around 4:45 a.m. before speeding off again, police said.

No injuries were reported, according to the MPD.

All three establishments were closed at the time, but each reported damage to their buildings, including shattered windows.
